DESCRIPTION: EPW - H. Golay & Son, London, World War II era British military aircraft watch with center-seconds, 62mm, chrome-plated base metal OF original case with rotating black painted bezel with inner markings on a scale of 0 to 360, band with threaded screw at 1 that operates as a clamp to allow or prevent rotation of bezel, case rear with British military broad arrow (pheon) marking in addition to HS.4 designation, case as-made with no bow or provision for such, white enamel dial with broad arrow marking between "A W" letters, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, likely 18J, Swiss made gilt mvt, s#268 within case and to dial. The H.S.4 designation is for a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm dash-mounted timepiece, and during the early portion of World War II these H. Golay watches were used among Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, mild haze to gilt surfaces, short fine thread of oxide to larger winding wheel; dial with some areas of fading to hour numerals, otherwise flawless in visible portion; nearly mint hands; case shows little wear, profuse micro-fine scratches to rear, no dents or dings, bezel with area of paint loss at bottom, few small scattered bits of paint loss elsewhere; crown shows very little wear; plastic crystal with scattered fine to micro-fine scratches.
